Sticking with STEM Means Limitless Possibilities for Future Careers

Panelists at the Science Extravaganza all had the same message for middle-school students: stick with STEM for a career with limitless opportunities.

Hosted by the CSULB chapter of MAES, the second annual event drew nearly 300 students from Perry Lindsey, Stephens, and Franklin Classical middle schools, as well as volunteers from The Aerospace Corp., Boeing, and other companies and student organizations.

Dean Receives NAACP Higher Ed Award

Long Beach State College of Engineering Dean Forouzan Golshani will receive the NAACP’s Higher Education Award at the Founder’s Celebration Dinner on Nov. 2. Long Beach State University President Jane Close Conoley was the recipient of the Higher Education Award in 2015.

“I am very honored to be recognized with this distinction,” said Golshani, who has served as the college’s dean since 2007. “I am both personally and professionally dedicated to equality. At Long Beach State, we work hard to ensure that each of our students, who come from diverse backgrounds, has an equitable opportunity to excel in their engineering education.”

Carmen Taylor, Long Beach State Vice President of Student Affairs, is also being recognized, with the Zelma Lipscomb Award. Besides honoring area individuals, the Founder’s Celebration Dinner generates funds for programs supported by the NAACP’s Long Beach branch, including the MESA Schools Program. COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING MAKES CONTINUING STRIDES IN DIVERSITY

The CSULB College of Engineering has made gains in awarding degrees to underrepresented minorities in the latest rankings from the American Society for Engineering Education.

CSULB ranked 8th among U.S. and Canadian universities for the number of engineering bachelor’s degrees awarded to Hispanic students in 2016, the most recent year for which statistics are available. That is up from 10th in the previous year. CSULB also ranked 17th for the number of engineering bachelor’s degrees awarded to Asian-American students in 2016, an increase over 2015’s 19th–place ranking.

CSULB ranked 16th for the percentage of women tenure/tenure-track engineering faculty, up from 17th the previous year. At CSULB, more than one-quarter of T/TT engineering faculty are women. Continue reading “COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING MAKES CONTINUING STRIDES IN DIVERSITY”

MAE Department Salutes Its Alumni, Volunteers, and Graduates

CSULB Mechanical and Aerospace students on Monday gathered with faculty and advisors for a celebration before their graduation.

“This is a milestone. Your efforts and hard work have paid off,” said MAE Chair Jalal Torabzadeh. “It’s a great day to be proud of your achievements. This is also an opportunity for you to say thank you for all who helped you on your journey.”

Ross Ahlberg, who received MAE’s Distinguished Alumni Award, said CSULB’s mechanical engineering program provides a solid career foundation. Boeing Technical Fellow Advises Faculty on How to Protect IP

howeInventors previously secured patents by documenting that they were the first to conceive of the invention. Now, however, patents are issued to those who file first with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.

“An inventor has to file the patent as quickly as possible. It’s who gets to the patent office first,” said Boeing Technical Fellow Wayne Howe, speaking at the second meeting of the CSULB chapter of the National Academy of Inventors.

College of Engineering Dean Forouzan Golshani, the chapter president, said generating and protecting intellectual property is an important aspect of academic life. Dean Golshani Inducted into National Academy of Inventors

FBI Discusses Insider Threats at CSULB CIO/CEO Cybersecurity Forum

FBI agents offered advice on responding to insider threats and cyber breaches at the monthly meeting of the CIO/CEO Cybersecurity Forum.

The prevalence of insider threats “is definitely growing,” said Gina Osborn, FBI assistant special agent in charge of cyber and computer forensics. However, providing training to combat this type of threat is expensive.

“The federal government is trying very hard to bring the expertise to local police departments so they can work these cases. Spring Engineering Lecture to Address Future of Aerospace in Southern California

This month’s Engineering Distinguished Lecture will address a topic of concern to many in the region: the future of the aerospace industry in Southern California.

The rate of decline in Southern California’s aerospace manufacturing has been significantly higher than the rest of the nation. With full airplane assembly practically gone from California, there is little incentive for the vast aerospace supplier base to stay in the region. Unless proactive measures are implemented rapidly, there is a strong possibility that the high rate of migration may continue. The region must create an appropriate public-private partnership model as the basis for an ecosystem that will support the revival of this industry in Southern California. Dean Golshani Named National Academy of Inventors Fellow

CSULB College of Engineering Dean Forouzan Golshani, holder of nearly a dozen patents, is among 175 distinguished academic inventors named as Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors.

Election as an NAI Fellow is an honor bestowed upon academic innovators and inventors who have demonstrated “a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions and innovations that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society.”

The 2016 Fellows are named inventors on 5,437 issued U.S. patents. Included among NAI’s 757 Fellows—who together hold over 26,000 patents—are more than 94 presidents and senior leaders of research universities and institutes; 376 members of the National Academy of Sciences; 28 inductees of the National Inventors Hall of Fame; 45 recipients of the U.S. National Medal of Technology and Innovation and U.S. National Medal of Science; 28 Nobel Laureates, 215 AAAS Fellows; 132 IEEE Fellows; and 116 Fellows of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, among other awards and distinctions. CSULB Forming University Chapter of National Academy of Inventors

National_Academy_of_Inventors_logoCSULB has many inventors in its midst, from the College of the Arts to the College of Engineering. On Dec. 8, all are invited to attend the first meeting of the newly formed  National Academy of Inventors chapter at CSULB.
