CSULB Research Funding Opportunities for Students

  • Department Scholarships
  • Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP): Sponsored by the NSF Foundation the goal of CSULB LSAMP is to enhance math and science skills for minority students majoring in science, technology, mathematics and engineering to enable them to successfully complete their academic degree program towards careers in the STEM disciplines. This program involves a cooperative effort between CSULB and Cerritos College, and includes a three-week summer workshop designed to prepare students for enrollment in calculus during the upcoming academic year and to support student involvement in activities that enhance graduate school readiness.
  • Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE): Sponsored by a grant from the NIH the RISE program aims to increase the interest, skills, and competitiveness of students in pursuit of biomedical research careers. Two distinct programs exist to meet the unique academic needs and professional demands of the biomedical research field: The RISE Starters Program and RISE Fellows Program.   • Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC): Funded by the NIH, the MARC program aims to increase the number of well-trained students from underrepresented groups who enter research careers in biomedicine. Biomedical research is broadly defined to include biology, microbiology, physiology and kinesiology, biochemistry, neuropsychology, immunology, genetics and molecular biology, behavior, mathematics, anthropology, chemistry, bioengineering and biophysics.
  • Bridges to the Baccalaureate: Funded by the NIH, this program designed to strengthen the relationship that exists between two key community colleges, Long Beach City College and Cerritos Community College, and CSULB. The major focus of this summer program is to enhance the students' academic competitiveness. Selected students and faculty spend 9 weeks in the summer in CSULB laboratories participating in hands-on research. These experiences also provide a unique opportunity to take advantage of the latest scientific information through special seminars and field trips with industry partners.
  • Beckman Scholars: The Beckman Scholars Program aims to advance the education, research training, and personal development of students with the potential to achieve distinction in their academic field, as well as become outstanding leaders in their careers and professions. Support is provided for four students working toward bachelor’s degrees in chemistry, biology, or physics in the form of student stipends, laboratory supplies and funds for travel to appropriate scientific meetings.
  • John & Elizabeth Leonard Scholarships: The John and Elizabeth Leonard Scholarship awards two $5,000 scholarships yearly, one graduate and one undergraduate, to students who have been contributing to their own education costs through part or full-time work. The intent of the scholarship is to assist students by replacing or augmenting those earnings, thereby affording the student more time for academic mastery, research, or major-related internships.
  • James L. Jensen Undergraduate Research Fellowship: The James L. Jensen Undergraduate Research Fellowship awards $1,000 to a declared undergraduate major in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics to engage in undergraduate research with a CNSM faculty member.
  • McNair Scholars Program: Named after the late Dr. Ronald E. McNair, an African American physicist and NASA astronaut who died in the 1986 Challenger explosion, the CSULB McNair Scholars Program provides academic support services, research opportunities and involvement in scholarly activities to thirty low-income, first-generation and underrepresented students enrolled at CSULB and prepares them for doctoral studies by working close with them through their undergraduate requirements, encouraging their entrance into graduate programs and tracking their progress to successful completion of advanced degrees.
  • Sally Casanova Pre-doctoral Scholars Program: Named after Dr. Sally Casanova, this program is designed to increase the pool of university faculty by supporting the doctoral aspirations of individuals who are: current upper division or graduate students in the CSU, economically and educationally disadvantaged, interested in a university faculty career, U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and leaders of tomorrow. Casanova scholars are exposed to unique opportunities to explore and prepare to succeed in doctoral programs.
  • CSULB Graduate Research Fellowship: Graduate candidates must be nominated by faculty. Each college selects one fellowship recipient, who i) must be a California resident and ii) must meet the criteria for financial aid eligibility. In addition to these seven fellowships, there we have two additional need-based fellowships and two fellowships that may be awarded to candidates not eligible for financial aid (including international students). The fellowship is an award of $4,500 each semester. Due to College's Office of the Dean by Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at 5:00pm.   • CSULB Center for Scholarship Information.: Serving as a campus resource on the complete scholarship process, administering campus scholarships when necessary, and assisting scholarship fundraising efforts.

National Research Programs and Internships

NSF Undergraduate Education

Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship Program (IGERT)

The IGERT program has been developed to meet the challenges of educating U.S. Ph.D. scientists and engineers who will pursue careers in research and education. The program is intended to catalyze a cultural change in graduate education, by establishing innovative new models for graduate education and training in a fertile environment for collaborative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. It is also intended to facilitate diversity in student participation and preparation, and to contribute to the development of a diverse, globally-engaged, science and engineering workforce.

This program provides educational opportunities for Undergraduate Students, Graduate Students. This program supports institutions that may provide support to individuals at those institutions.

Research in Undergraduate Institutions (RUI)

The RUI activity supports research by faculty members of predominantly undergraduate institutions through the funding of (1) individual and collaborative research projects, (2) the purchase of shared-use research instrumentation, and (3) Research Opportunity Awards for work with NSF-supported investigators at other institutions. RUI proposals are evaluated and funded by the NSF programs in the disciplinary areas of the proposed research. A Research Opportunity Award is usually funded as a supplement to the NSF grant of the host researcher, and the application is submitted by the host institution.

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)

The REU program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the NSF. There are two mechanisms for support of student research: (1) REU Sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. Proposals with an international dimension are welcome. A partnership with the Department of Defense supports REU Sites in DoD-relevant research areas. (2) REU Supplements may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects or may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements.
