Innovation Challenge Holds First Kickoff Meeting

Innovation Challenge pictureAt the first kickoff meeting for the CSULB Innovation Challenge, an entrepreneurship contest supported by the colleges of the Arts, Business Administration, and Engineering, last year’s winners were more than happy to share tips with this year’s potential contestants.

The Boxing Movement team, made up of business majors Eric Lara and Anthony Gonzalez, and mechanical engineering major Gina Glionta, won the top prize of $10,000 in seed funding and $40,000 in services during the 2015-16 Innovation Challenge for a mobile boxing gym that could be trucked to recreation centers and other facilities to help seniors have fun and maintain strength. It’s Never Too Early to Start Building Your Professional Network

Xerox Vice President of Alliance and Partnership Management Arnold Hackett used to stay at his desk and work instead of having lunch with team members. He thought he was showing colleagues that he was making a contribution. But instead, co-workers thought Hackett just didn’t like them.

Going out to lunch with co-workers is just one of the ways you can build your network in a professional environment. Hackett, a 2001 CSULB MS graduate in computer science, visited the College of Engineering on Tuesday as the first speaker in the Department of Professional Development & Internships’ fall 2016 series. College Launches New Biomedical Engineering Major

biomed-blogStudents interested in the fast-growing field of biomedical engineering can now take advantage of the new BS in Biomedical Engineering being introduced by the CSULB College of Engineering.

The BSBME replaces the Bachelor of Science in Engineering – Option in Biomedical and Clinical Engineering (housed in the CSULB Electrical Engineering Department), and makes Long Beach the only CSU in Southern California to offer a dedicated biomedical engineering major.

CBA Offers Business Plan Coaching

Students interested in entrepreneurship—including those who plan to participate in the Innovation Challenge—are invited to attend business-plan coaching sessions put on by the CSULB College of Business Administration.

At 7 p.m. each Tuesday in CBA-139A, a group of MBA alumni called the Founders will hold coaching sessions about business plan writing in particular and starting a business in general. Those who have questions about their innovation, business plan, or how to start a business are invited to attend.

The Founders are comprised of Brian Budzinski, Dean Heiss, JR Jimenez, and Naki Patetefa. Budzinski received his undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering from Purdue University and works as an engineering manager at The Boeing Co. With an undergraduate degree in aeronautical science with a minor in aviation safety from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Heiss works as a senior project manager at Southern California Edison. Jimenez holds an undergraduate degree in psychology from University of California, Irvine and is a marketing and event manager for Entrepreneur Media. Patetefa, who has a CSULB undergraduate degree in finance, real estate, and law, works as a customer support manager at Ultimate Software.

Innovation Challenge Kicks Off 7th Season

Innovation Challenge snapshotStartups are an important vehicle for U.S. economic growth, accounting for half of all new jobs created. At CSULB, students have a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience in starting a business through the Innovation Challenge, an annual contest that provides the winning entrepreneurial team with $50,000 in cash and services to get started.

Now in its seventh year, the Innovation Challenge is supported by the CSULB Colleges of the Arts, Business Administration, and Engineering, along with industry leaders with varied high-level business experience. 8 Faculty Join College of Engineering

New Faculty snapshotThe CSULB College of Engineering has hired seven new tenure-track faculty, expanding expertise into technologies such as optoelectronic devices, the Internet of Things, Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS), thermal fluids, visual data sensing, and therapeutic systems to promote healing. In addition, Bill Wolfe, Faculty Emeritus in Ohio State University’s Civil, Environmental, and Geodesic Engineering Department, will spearhead growth of a new engineering specialty as temporary CSULB Beavers Endowed Chair in Heavy Civil Engineering. CSULB College of Engineering Makes Strides in Student Diversity

ASEE_Logo_Stacked_RGBThe CSULB College of Engineering has made gains in awarding degrees to underrepresented minorities in the latest rankings from the American Society for Engineering Education.

CSULB ranked 10th among U.S. and Canadian universities for the number of engineering bachelor’s degrees awarded to Hispanic students in 2015, up from 11th in the previous year. CSULB also ranked 19th for the number of engineering bachelor’s degrees awarded to Asian-American students in 2015, an increase over 2014’s 20th–place ranking. DENSO Foundation to Support CSULB Driver Interface Research

The DENSO North America Foundation has awarded the CSULB College of Engineering a $50,000 grant to help develop interfaces that will improve driver safety and responsiveness and advance the automotive industry’s understanding.
