Elizabeth [Murray] Smith, Will, 30 September 1769, J. M. Robbins Papers, Courtesy, Massachusetts Historical Society In August 1769, Elizabeth [Murray] Smith’s second husband, James Smith, died at the age of 80. Exhausted from caring for him, she was not in good health herself. Thinking a change of scene might do her good, she began to plan for a trip to Great Britain to visit friends and relatives. As preparation for that trip, she sat for a portrait by John Singleton Copley and wrote this will shortly before sailing in early October. Her prenuptial agreement of 1760 would have allowed her to write a will as a married woman if she had predeceased her spouse. As it was, she wrote this will as a very wealthy widow.
