The role of the private citizen in a civil war can be vague and unclear; it is not surprising that whether whig or tory, women had something of a collective reputation for hesitant patriotism or outright neutrality. But women soon discovered that in this civil war, any theater of conflict could create violence that would change their lives. They might not be soldiers, but they were not immune from attack.”
