Attendance Policy

 

Active participation in class is very important. For each unexcused absence, you’ll lose 10 points and I’ll deduct 2 points for each tardiness and early departure. Please see the attached policy for excused absences. I’ll need to see hard evidence for excused absences. Absences, tardiness, and early exits are inadvisable. Each absence will also result in the loss of assigned activity of the day. In case of emergency notify the instructor prior to Week. The practices in Week and the collaborative activities are essential for success in exams. There is no possible makeup for the activities that you miss. You need to be actively involved in discussions, presentations, and practices.

  

Course Description: Examination and application of educational research methodology, including various types of qualitative and quantitative methods, research designs, sampling methods, inferential statistics, hypothesis testing, and the structure and content of the various elements of a research proposal.

 

Student Learning Objectives:

Students who complete this course will demonstrate:

 

 

·        The ability to formulate qualitative and quantitative research questions and to select an appropriate research design to answer the research questions posed.

·        Skills and knowledge related to developing and writing the various elements of a research proposal, including problem statement, literature review and methods sections.

·        Knowledge regarding the fundamental aspects of, as well as similarities and differences between, quantitative and qualitative approaches to educational research.

·        Knowledge of the threats to the validity of inferences that can be made from experimental and quasi-experimental designs utilized in quantitative educational research.

·        Skills in performing traditional qualitative field research methods, such as observations and interviews.

·        Skills in analyzing data, interpreting results, and evaluating research reports or articles.

 

Course Policies and Requirements

 

Requirements for Written Assignments:

 

All written assignments must be in Microsoft Word format, typed, spell-checked, double-spaced with a standard 12-point font, and submitted to Beach Board on the date due. In addition, written work must be original and created for the purposes of this course. Whenever references are used, they must be properly cited using the American Psychological Association (APA) format. The university library has the full APA style guide in its reference collection. In addition, a quick guide to APA formatting is available on the course BeachBoard site. 

 

 

 

Late assignments: Assignments no more than one week late will be subject to a 10% penalty. Assignments no more than two or three weeks late are subject to a 20% penalty. Assignments beyond three weeks late may only be accepted by special arrangement with the instructor. Assignments cannot be accepted after the last week of instruction.

 

Cheating and Plagiarism:

 

 

The terms cheating and plagiarism are defined in the CSULB Bulletin (page 55). It is the student’s responsibility to read and understand these definitions and to avoid any activity that may be classified as cheating or plagiarism. A determination that a student has cheated or plagiarized may result in discipline as described in Sections 41301 of Title 5, California Code of Regulations (page 56 in the  CSULB Bulletin).
