I. Bachelor of Arts in Music

Majors will:

  1. Demonstrate competence in solo and collaborative performance on a primary instrument or voice
  2. Describe aspects of musical sound and notation using the technical language of music theory
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of music history, including Eurogenic art music, popular music, and non-Eurogenic or “world” music traditions
  4. Write a substantial document supporting an original thesis about music using resources related to music preservation and scholarship

II. Bachelor of Music

Students will:

  1. Demonstrate the entrepreneurial and musicianship skills necessary to be a successful performer and/or teacher
  2. Describe how being a musical artist and/or educator can ethically impact local and global society while engaging respectfully with musics of non-Western cultures
  3. Demonstrate a working knowledge of musics from various cultures and time periods, including an understanding of harmony, theory, and composition
  4. Develop critical thinking skills through explorations of musical creativity, interpretation, and improvisation

III. Master of Music

Graduate Students will:

  1. Have a broad understanding of musical styles and genres, critically considering their role in the contemporary climate of performance, teaching, and scholarship
  2. Foster a deep breadth of repertory in their chosen field through live performance and the study of music history and theory
  3. Identify and articulate their own musical vision while demonstrating traditional and emerging performance practice in the discipline
  4. Organize and communicate aesthetic issues relating to performance
  5. Synthesize and practice pedagogical and theoretical concepts relating to their instrument or area of musical study
