Campus Involvement

CSULB students walking across campus with school spirit.

Division of Student Services

The Office of the Vice President for Student Services will provide program oversight and assessment, and will oversee all Student Services departments involved in the Making Wise Beach CHOICES Program. These include, but are not limited to, the following departments.

Student Health Center / ATOD Program

The primary campus collaboration will be with the campus Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Program (ATOD), which was established in 2001 and uses a comprehensive approach for reducing problems on and around the CSULB campus. ATOD currently utilizes certified peer educators to conduct ATOD related outreach presentations on campus. ATOD offers open Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings on campus for all CSULB students and conducts a mandatory ATOD class for students that violate school policy. The ATOD Program will collaborate in providing “Social Norm” posters and materials.

Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR)

Making Wise Beach CHOICES banners, posters and flyers will be displayed and distributed at all orientations to promote student awareness.

Student Life and Development

Development and leadership classes will be offered through the Lois J. Swanson Leadership Resource Center’s Leadership Academy certificate program.  This department will promote the Making Wise Beach CHOICES Program via their extensive targeted e-mail list to student-athletes.

University Student Union

Making Wise Beach CHOICES banners, posters, and flyers will be displayed and distributed in the student union throughout the year and at related events, such as movie night/game night.

Beach Pride Center

Will participate by promoting attendance at games and other non-alcoholic Making Wise Beach CHOICES-related events.

Housing and Residential Life

Making Wise Beach CHOICES will work closely with Housing and Residential Life to promote and advertise events throughout the year.

Greek Life

Making Wise Beach CHOICES will coordinate events with Greek Life to promote an alcohol-free fun time and model lifestyle possibilities.

University Police

The University Police will work with Making Wise Beach CHOICES to demonstrate a sobriety test simulation and to show the effects of over consumption via “beer goggles” (disequilibrium experiential devices) at various events.

Athletic Department

The Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) will distribute information to the entire student-athlete population and will act as leaders/mentors in the Making Wise Beach CHOICES Program. The main functions of SAAC include promoting communication between the athletic administration and student-athletes; providing feedback and insight into athletic department issues; building a sense of community within the athletic department and all teams; organizing community service efforts, and creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation in the university and community. In addition, the Senior Women’s Coordinator and the CHAMPS/Life Skills Coordinator will actively participate in the Making Wise Beach CHOICES Program.
