Program details

2022 Winter Research Experience is a 12-week program for current CSULB STEM transfer students who participated in the Fall 2021 EXCEL Transfer Learning Community (completion of NSCI 390) and are in good academic standing. In this program, you will attend a three-day online orientation that includes: research-focused trainings (such as lab safety and ethical conduct) and professional and research career development opportunities. You will be required to attend scheduled online Brown Bag Meetings throughout the remaining weeks of the program introducing you to various research currently conducted on campus and to research careers. At the conclusion of 11 weeks, you are invited to attend an online recognition event where you will present your research and experience.

Program goal

The goal of the program is to provide you with an understanding and appreciation for research, while encouraging your transition to other campus research opportunities.

Project objectives

  1. To increase your ability to apply content and skills learned in the classroom to research
  2. To increase your understanding of the research process and the notion that science is a creative process that advances further knowledge
  3. To increase your knowledge of ethical conduct in your field, and
  4. To increase your ability to interpret results in research and draw conclusions

Eligibility Requirements

  • STEM transfer students enrolled in NSCI 390
  • 2.8 GPA or above, Good Academic Standing
  • Enrolled in full time units Spring 2022
  • Currently declared major in the College of Engineering or the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at CSULB
  • Cannot be a participant in a concurrent funded research program

  2. Students enrolled in NSCI 390*
    • Fall 2021 Courses and Instructor Names

    *HSI STEM Team will verify academic grades before and after program selection.

  3. Two references – must be the names and contact information for a STEM professor, lab instructor, or STEM program director/coordinator only (excluding HSI STEM Project Director and staff)
  4. 1 – 2 page Resume – must be submitted in PDF Format ONLY.

Note: Review your Application Packet CAREFULLY! You must honor ALL requirements and deadlines. Incomplete packets will not be considered for the program.
