Faculty Interest Form

Thank you for your interest in becoming a faculty mentor for the HSI STEM 2021 Summer Bridge to The Beach Program beginning Thursday, June 9 through Friday, August 6, 2021.

This year, we are offering a modified program to current transfer students who have participated in the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 EXCEL Transfer Learning Community and are in good academic standing. The current campus social distancing requirements and the safety protocols established in the labs for this summer necessitates these modifications for this year’s program.

We are certain that your mentorship and guidance, along with their experience in an active research project, will engage students in contemporary research, while facilitating their transition to other minority research programs on campus. Our hope is that, in turn, the students will increase their academic performance and retention in STEM majors.

Given that this summer’s event offers both in-person and virtual research opportunities, your thorough responses to this interest form will permit the HSI STEM Team to best match students to faculty members that share common interests.

Research Expectations and Guidelines

SBB students must be engaged in hands-on, full-time research from June 14 – August 6. Hands-on nor virtual research does not include writing manuals, reports, curriculum development, lab experiments, nor shadowing only. Literature review is expected for background information necessary at the beginning of the research experience, but should not be the primary focus. Please direct questions or concerns to Dr. Marinez at eric.marinez@csulb.edu or Lark Crumpler at lark.crumpler@csulb.edu.

Student Placement

Students will be matched based on student and faculty availability/match. Only 1-2 students maximum will be assigned to each faculty member. Please note that there is always a possibility that an appropriate match cannot be made, even if you are selected.

At the online Information Session, you will receive additional information from Student Programs Coordinator, Lark Crumpler, if there is a potential match between you and a student.
Please submit this Faculty Interest Form by the deadline of May 7, 2021 at 10pm.
