About the Organization

The Children’s Literature and Reading Special Interest Group (IRA CL/R SIG) is a nonprofit organization which was chartered by the International Reading Association (IRA) on November 7, 1979.

Our primary concern is using children’s and young adult literature (prekindergarten through high school - preK-12) in the development of literacy.

Members include teachers, librarians, university professors, parents and grandparents –– those who are concerned about the development of literacy and know that learning to read is not enough, but to be truly educated, one must continually read in order to grow and improve one's mind, and that loving to read is a key to real happiness in life.

We operate as an autonomous organization on democratic principles, governed by Bylaws which are revised periodically to keep abreast of the changes in our organization and approved by the membership.

We believe in volunteerism; we invite you to use your creativity to strategize how your dreams and plans are complementary with ours.
