Deep Water Exercise Classes Offered

Published: May 5, 2017

The Club Sports and Recreation program at CSULB is offering deep water exercise classes six days a week in the Ken Lindgren pool complex on campus. Deep Water Aerobics is a fun, no-impact, whole-body workout that builds energy, strength, balance and endurance.

Dave Macayaon, a doctor of physical therapy, directs instruction for individuals of all ages and fitness levels.

“These workouts are great for everyone from beginners to competitive athletes,” Macayaon said. “Since there is no impact to stress the joints, people who are recovering from injuries or struggling with chronic issues will also benefit. Water provides the resistance, so everyone finds a level of effort that fits their needs.”

Participants wear inflatable cuffs around their ankles to add buoyancy and resistance against the water. Macayaon says this combination allows people to increase the intensity of their exercise without fear of injury. In fact, many athletes who have been injured in other sports turn to deep-water training to stay fit while they recover, he says.

Rita Hayes, Director of Club Sports and Recreation, said the program has been extremely popular with the community for over two decades.

“People love the lively instructors and camaraderie that comes from working out together,” she said.

Hour-long classes are offered at noon every Monday, Wednesday and Friday; Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m.; and Saturday mornings at 7 a.m. Participants can join as many classes as they wish for a monthly fee or pay for individual drop-in sessions. Discounts are available to CSULB faculty and staff and members of LifeFit and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the university.

“The first week is always free,” said Hayes, “so people can experience this great program and meet our certified instructors before they commit.”
