TEDxCSULB Speakers Look To Inspire

Published: April 4, 2016

A group of entrepreneurial students, with the assistance of faculty advisor Deborah Thien of Geology, have spent the last year making their dream of hosting a TEDx conference at CSULB a reality. TEDxCSULB comes to campus this month will include a range of talks that look to inspire.

TEDX events grew out of the popular TED conference and are designed to spark conversation and connection, and TEDxCSULB will include talks on issues that matter to the community.

TED, an abbreviation for Technology, Entertainment and Design, is a prestigious platform that highlights the spirit of discovery, intellectual curiosity and discussions that have global effects on the world.

Student organizer Matt Argame began his journey of bringing TEDx to CSULB amidst an already ambitious roster of extracurricular activities. Besides his work with TEDxCSULB, Argame is a President’s Ambassador, Project OCEAN Undergraduate Peer Educator and NIH BUILD Scholar. He feels each of these affiliations have helped him nurture the skills he has relied on to organize the event.

“We wanted to connect to the university and bring the campus community together—students, staff, faculty—and create the dialogues that are intuitive in TEDx events,” he said.

The process of getting the event off the ground included petitioning the provost for permission to apply for a TEDx license, attending TEDx planning conferences and interviewing for and selecting a team of student leaders. When the call went out for volunteers, Argame and his team received more than 400 applications.

The theme of this year’s TEDxCSULB is “InspirAction” and the organizers hope that through TEDxCSULB, the campus community will be inspired and moved to action.

The event will feature 15 handpicked speakers, most with ties to CSULB. TEDxCSULB will be held on Saturday, April 9, in the CSULB University Student Union.
