Notice:

In an effort to protect the health and safety of the campus community the Language Labs will be closed until further notice. However, language tutoring for CSULB students will continue online. Please visit the tutoring schedule section of this page for available languages and times.

Language Tutoring

The Language Center is happy to provide free language tutoring to students enrolled in language classes on campus. Tutoring, conversation practice and other language related support is available for ASL, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish.

Individual & Group Learning

The Center strives to be a welcoming space to practice listening and speaking your new language. You can practice with classmates, other students studying your target language, native speakers, or our language tutors. While the Center is not able to provide quite study areas we do have many areas available for small group discussion and collaborative learning. Your campus group is also welcome to reserve one of our lab spaces for meetings or activities.

Collaborative Classroom Space

The Language Center has several spaces designed for collaborative teaching and learning. Room 305 is a computer lab and discussion space containing 24 student computing stations. Room 306 is a flexible space partitioned by a sliding wall providing workspaces accommodating 20-44 students. The small group discussion area in Room 306C can be reserved for group discussion, oral practice, or as an open interview space. The video conferencing space in Room 316 seats up to 12 people. It is ideal for video conferencing, discussion groups, small classes and student clubs

Study Abroad

Use the language skills you have worked so hard to obtain--travel abroad! Ask us about destinations and opportunities for travel and study abroad. We can help you connect with other CSU and campus resources.

In an effort to promote the healtyh and safety of staff and students the Language Center will be closed for the remainder of the semester. Language tutoring is available online.

Foreign Language Tutoring

The Language Center is happy to provide free language tutoring. Meet some of our language tutors:

My name is Arizai Aragón Castillo. I was born and raised in Mexico. I moved to the USA in 2006, year when I began high school. I have an AA in Liberal Arts and Humanities from Santa Ana College. I also completed the medical and legal interpretation programs at Southern California School of Interpretation (SCSI). In 2018 I obtained my Bachelor's degree at CSULB. I am on my third semester in the Spanish MA program which so far has been fascinating. I have volunteer as an interpreter for the Domestic violence program in Los Angeles courthouse and with the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). I am one of the new tutors in the Language lab which excites me since I am looking forward to help out students to improve their knowledge in the Spanish speaking world.

My name is Emily Wysocki and I am currently an Undergraduate in German and International Studies and minoring in Communication Studies. I have attended the Portland State University's Deutsche am Pazifik in Portland, Oregon and I spent the Spring 2019 semester studying abroad in Cologne, Germany. Now I am a tutor here at the Language LAB to help students improve their German speaking and reading skills while preparing to apply for the German graduate program, here at CSULB.

As a native signer of American Sign Language, Taylor is here at the Language LAB to help prepare ASLD students for their future. An undergraduate ASL Linguistics major, Taylor understands how to efficiently encourage transition between spoken and signed languages. Taylor is passionate about ASL, books, cats, coffee, and sharing Deaf culture with people. Come say hi!

Tutoring, conversation practice, and other language related support is available for ASL, Chinese, Filipino, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish.
