Scholarship Opportunities

The first place you should go to search for scholarship opportunities at CSULB is the Center for Scholarship Information.

Here are some veteran and dependent specific scholarship opportunities for your review.


Pat Tillman Foundation

Offers Military scholarships for veterans, active servicemen and spouses.


Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship

The Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship (Fry Scholarship) pays eligible dependents up to 36 months of the full, 100% level, of the Post-9/11 GI Bill. This includes the tuition and fee payment, a monthly housing allowance, and a books and supplies stipend.

Currently the Fry Scholarship is only available for children of Servicemembers who died in the line of duty after September 10, 2001. 

The Fry Scholarship will be expanded to surviving spouses of military personnel who died in the line of duty after September 10, 2001.

High school students who have faced & overcome great obstacles in their young lives. While many aid programs are directed primarily to recognizing academic achievement or leadership potential, the Horatio Alger program also seeks students who have a commitment to use their college degrees in service to others.



Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society

  • NMCRS Education Assistance is available for:
    • Children and spouses of active duty or retired Sailors and Marines (including retired Reservists drawing military retirement pay)
    • Children of deceased Sailors and Marines who died on active duty or after retirement
    • MECEP or MECP students (or selectees)



Scholarships for Military Children

Provides college scholarship grants to children of active duty personnel, reserve/guard & retired military members or survivors of deceased members. Applicants must be enrolled, or planning to attend a full time undergraduate degree program at an accredited college or university.


Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation

Provides scholarships to veterans. Must work a minimum of 20 hours a week.


Student Veterans of America Scholarship Program

The SVA scholarship program will grant scholarships to student veterans that have demonstrated academic excellence in the following categories:

  • Critical programs commonly referred to as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM degrees.
  • International relations, foreign language, and diplomacy programs.
  • Other high demand fields as dictated by foundations and donors.

  • Must be honorably discharged from any branch of the US military or Coast Guard & be enrolled or about to enroll in an entrepreneurial course of study.
  • Completed application packets must include a current resume, academic transcript, copy of military discharge certificate, brief essay of career goal, & 2 letters of recommendation.


Veterans United Foundation Scholarship

The Veterans United Foundation Scholarship is awarded through the Veterans United Foundation. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization made up of financial contributions from the employees of Veterans United Home Loans. Our employees strongly believe in supporting our communities, our military and their families. We will be awarding up to 5 one-time scholarships for up to $50,000 each for this upcoming semester to eligible students. To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must be a surviving spouse or child of a deceased servicemember or Veteran. Full details and an application can be found here:


VFW Military Scholarships

  • The VFW and one of its major supporters, Sport Clips Haircuts, have again partnered to help our veterans and their families. The VFW's "Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship" will provide service members and veterans with the financial assistance they need to complete their educational goals without incurring excessive student loan debt. It’s just another way to say “thank you” to those who deserve it the most.
