Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Studies (120 units)

Residence Requirement for the Majors

At least four upper division courses required for the major must be completed successfully at CSULB. Students are encouraged, however, to complete up to a year of their language study in approved programs of study abroad.

Requirements

A minimum of 35 units is required. CHIN 101 and 102 are prerequisite to the major and may be satisfied by appropriate high school preparation or by examination

Lower Division (11 units):

Complete ALL of the following courses:

  • AAAS 100 Asian Eats (3)
    Prerequisite: None.
  • CHIN 201 Intermediate Chinese (4)
    Prerequisite: GE Foundations or competency equivalent for advanced study in Chinese
  • CHIN 202 Intermediate Chinese (4)
    Prerequisite: GE Foundations or competency equivalent for advanced study in Chinese

Upper Division (9 units)

Complete ALL of the following courses:

  • CHIN 301 Advanced Chinese (3)
    Prerequisite: CHIN 202 or equivalent, or consent of Instructor.
  • CHIN 380 Languages and Dialects in China (3)
    Prerequisite: CHIN 102 or Equivalent.
  • AAAS 492 Senior Research Seminar (3)
    Prerequisites: Upper-division standing.

Upper Division Electives (15 units):

A. Complete 9 units from the following courses:

  • CHIN 302, CHIN 311, CHIN 321, CHIN 370, CHIN 390, CHIN 410, CHIN 421, CHIN 430A, CHIN 430B, CHIN 430C, CHIN 451, CHIN 462, CHIN 485, CHIN 490, CHIN 499; CHIN/HIST 382B.

B. Complete 6 units from the following courses:

  • ANTH 332; AH 468, AH 469; ASAM 319, ASAM 331, ASAM 340, ASAM 345, ASAM 407; A/ST 306, A/ST 307, A/ST 309, A/ST 320, A/ST 336; ASAM/CHLS 335; HIST/WGSS 406; HIST 382A, HIST 388, HIST 412; JAPN 350; JOUR 312; PHIL 306; POSC 362, POSC 455, POSC 485; R/ST 341.
