David Moellenkamp is celebrating his 27th year in education. He is the Assistant Principal of Visual and Performing Arts and Director of Choral Activities at Los Alamitos High School in Southern California. He received his Bachelor of Music Education from Millikin University in Decatur, IL, and his Master of Administration from National University.
David spent the first 16 years of his career in central Illinois where he directed the Sullivan Singers Show choir program. For 14 summers, David directed and choreographed at the famed performing arts training center, Stagedoor Manor, in New York. More than 100 of his former students have performed on Broadway, appeared on network television, or starred in major motion pictures.
In 2016, He was named the Kennedy Center Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher of the Year. In 2018, David received the Excellence in Special Education from SELPA. Fame National Show Choir Series awarded him with Aspire Choir Director of the Year in 2017 and 2015. Also in 2017, David was named the Teacher of the Year for Los Alamitos School District. David was a semi-finalist for the 2016 Grammy Teacher of the Year and was the 2016 PTSA Teacher of the Year for Los Alamitos School District. In 2015, he was named the Orange County Department of Education Outstanding Secondary Music Educator of the Year. Playbill, the iconic Broadway magazine, name David as one of the most influential educators inspiring Broadway’s youth.
In his free time, he teaches Music Education classes at California State University, Long Beach and spends as much time as possible at the beach surfing.
