Dr. Alina Artemova earned her Master’s Degree in music at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and completed her Doctoral studies at the University of Arts and Culture in Moscow, Russia. She taught voice performance at the famous Gnesin’s State Music College in Moscow and worked with leading concert companies. She has performed in prestigious concert halls throughout Russia and later Germany, Netherlands and Czechoslovakia. In 1993, Dr. Artemova came to the United States where she continued performing in addition to teaching, accompanying and coaching singers at California State University, Long Beach, University of California, Irvine and Golden West College. Her solo works with orchestra include soprano in Ode to St. Cecilia (Handel), Ceremony of Carols (Britten), Nelson Mass (Haydn), Schubert’s Mass in G, Vesperae Solennes de Confessore (Mozart) and many others.

In 2002, she established the recital series, At the Gallery of Music, performing a variety of repertoire with world renowned pianist and professor of music, Leonid Levitsky. Dr. Artemova compiled a book of Russian songs by Glinka and Tchaikovsky, along with a CD she recorded with meastro Levitsky for GWC. She translated the songs in English and transliterated them into the International Phonetic Alphabet.

These are beautiful songs, but they are rarely performed in America because of the Cyrillic alphabet. I hope this book will help singers and audiences to discover more enjoyable music among Russian masterpieces.
