Before retiring from the Montebello Unified School District in 2017, Leonard Narumi spent his final 10 years serving as the district’s Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator. Prior to that, Narumi was widely regarded for his 24 years of work with Schurr High School’s band, orchestra, and auxiliary programs. Under his stewardship combined with the contributions of many extraordinarily talented co-directors and staff, Schurr’s students garnered many artistic and competitive accolades throughout Southern California, Florida, and Hawaii.

A "career-long" member of the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association, Narumi served as SCSBOA’s Vice-President of High School Honor Groups and as First Vice-President. He is a two-time recipient of the association’s "Gold Star Educator Award" and was recognized as an "Honorary Life Member" in 2016. He was also a Los Angeles County Teacher of the Year in 2002.

Still active as a clinician and guest conductor, Narumi also serves as a University Mentor to the next generation of music educators from CSULB.
