Female Faculty Share their Stories

They each had a story of how they got here. An early interest in science. The influence of family members or mentors. Even a random selection in an academic catalogue.

But the CSULB female engineering faculty who shared their backgrounds with Society of Women Engineers members all had one thing in common: a passion for research.

Civil engineering Assistant Professor Pitiporn Asvapathanagul’s path included a stint working in her family’s Thai restaurant. She’d earned her undergraduate degree in environmental engineering in Thailand when her family beckoned her to move to the U.S.

Eventually, her desire to return to engineering led her to earn a master’s degree and doctorate from University of California Irvine. At CSULB since 2012, Asvapathanagul is an expert in biological water reclamation. Continue reading “Female Faculty Share their Stories”

CSULB Innovators Inducted into NAI

Cal State Long Beach counts many inventors among its faculty. Scattered throughout the university’s eight colleges,  they have few opportunities to cross paths. But with establishment of a National Academy of Inventors chapter, that has now changed.

On Thursday, nearly two dozen inventors from the colleges of the Arts, Engineering, and Natural Sciences & Mathematics were inducted into the newly created chapter, which will meet once each semester.

The chapter has been championed by Simon Kim, CSULB associate vice president of research and sponsored programs, and College of Engineering Dean Forouzan Golshani, holder of nearly a dozen patents. Continue reading “CSULB Innovators Inducted into NAI”

Biomedical Engineering Department Adds First Full-time Faculty Member

Dr. Perla Ayala is a new CSULB assistant professor in a new department. The Biomedical Engineering department’s first full-time faculty member, Ayala is also part of a relatively new field.

Highly interdisciplinary, BME is a blend of chemistry, physics, and computer, mechanical, and electrical engineering. Embracing everything from diagnostic systems and artificial organs to prostheses and medical devices, it’s viewed as the bridge between medicine and engineering. 8 Faculty Join College of Engineering

New Faculty snapshotThe CSULB College of Engineering has hired seven new tenure-track faculty, expanding expertise into technologies such as optoelectronic devices, the Internet of Things, Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS), thermal fluids, visual data sensing, and therapeutic systems to promote healing. In addition, Bill Wolfe, Faculty Emeritus in Ohio State University’s Civil, Environmental, and Geodesic Engineering Department, will spearhead growth of a new engineering specialty as temporary CSULB Beavers Endowed Chair in Heavy Civil Engineering.
