When you attend a career fair, what steps can you take to stand out from the crowd?

Choua Her, university recruitment recruiter with Western Digital, shared her experiences Tuesday so attendees could be prepared for this Thursday’s CSULB STEM Job and Internship Fair.

First off, it’s important to identify which companies will attend the event, said Her. It’s easy to find the list of participating companies on the Career Center, then spend a few minutes visiting company websites and conducting online searches to decide which companies could be worthwhile to meet. Aerospace Corp. Hosting Info Session

Chris Dunbar, Associate Principal Director of the Aerospace Corp. will be the keynote speaker. He will be providing information about the company and internship and entry-level job opportunities. Army Provides MAE’s Yan Li with $800,000 for Materials Research

Yan Li, CSULB assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering, has been awarded a nearly $800,000 grant from the U.S. Army Research Lab to fund research leading to development of stronger, tougher materials.

It’s not difficult to create materials that are tough, or can handle much deformation before fracturing. But creating materials that have both attributes is another matter.

“Achieving high strength and high toughness in materials—this is a big challenge,” said Yan Li, CSULB assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering.

A nearly $800,000 grant Li has been awarded from the U.S. Army Research Lab will fund research leading to development of stronger, tougher materials. First-year funding of $200,000 will go toward the purchase of a very important piece of equipment—a powerful digital image camera. Innovation Challenge Holds First Kickoff Meeting

Innovation Challenge pictureAt the first kickoff meeting for the CSULB Innovation Challenge, an entrepreneurship contest supported by the colleges of the Arts, Business Administration, and Engineering, last year’s winners were more than happy to share tips with this year’s potential contestants.

The Boxing Movement team, made up of business majors Eric Lara and Anthony Gonzalez, and mechanical engineering major Gina Glionta, won the top prize of $10,000 in seed funding and $40,000 in services during the 2015-16 Innovation Challenge for a mobile boxing gym that could be trucked to recreation centers and other facilities to help seniors have fun and maintain strength. Innovation Challenge Kicks Off 7th Season

At CSULB, students have a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience in starting a business through the Innovation Challenge, an annual contest that provides the winning entrepreneurial team with $50,000 in cash and services to get started.

Now in its seventh year, the Innovation Challenge is supported by the CSULB Colleges of the Arts, Business Administration, and Engineering, along with industry leaders with varied high-level business experience. DENSO Foundation to Support CSULB Driver Interface Research

The DENSO North America Foundation has awarded the CSULB College of Engineering a $50,000 grant to help develop interfaces that will improve driver safety and responsiveness and advance the automotive industry’s understanding.

Mechanical Engineering Students Show Off Design Projects

me students design project snapFrom an operational hovercraft to a 3D-printed dog prosthetic to a grill that texts you when your food is cooked, the student projects shown off during the CSULB Mechanical Engineering Department’s 2015-16 Senior Design Project Exhibition demonstrated both creativity and technical understanding.

More than 100 students were enrolled in the Senior Design class, a two-semester capstone course that emphasizes the theory and practice of modern design and manufacturing. During the first semester, students focus on concept design and embodiment design, while the second semester is dedicated to project implementation. Are You WIRED for Leadership?

College of Engineering Professional Development Coordinator Paulina Mejia-Arroyo presents a certificate of appreciation to Hal Snyder.

After three decades in the workforce, Hal Snyder, a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council, has learned a fair amount about attributes of good leaders. Snyder, Vice President of Human Resources for Diversity and Inclusion at Southern California Gas Co., was at CSULB Tuesday to speak to engineering students about how to become future leaders.

The most important leadership attributes, he said, join together to spell WIRED. “This is truly what we look for,” he said of the five attributes. “These five are golden.”
