Labs Get Safety, Equipment Upgrades

Labs Get SafetyWhile many students were on summer vacation, the CSULB College of Engineering facilities team was hard at work completing an extensive lab modernization project. Involving two years of funding allocations, nearly a year of planning and more than a month of construction, the upgrades will not only expose students to state-of-the-art equipment, but also increase accessibility and make working in the labs even safer.

The biggest, and most expensive, part of the project was replacing cement floors with safer non-skid surfacing in the industrial labs, said COE Facilities Coordinator Mike Berg, who oversaw the planning and work. Raised platforms were also removed from many labs to improve handicapped accessibility and reduce trip hazards. There’s also now a trolley to move heavy lab materials, a hoist for sheet metal, and new personal protective equipment in labs throughout COE. Continue reading “Labs Get Safety, Equipment Upgrades”

Looking for a Few Good Candidates

Stem Job Fair Good CandidatesFor engineering students trying to land their first career opportunity, the Sept. 17  STEM Job Fair was the place to be. The annual fair attracted hundreds of job-seeking students, as well as nearly 100 hiring companies ranging from large corporations to government agencies to up-and-coming startups and in between.

Students waited patiently in long lines to turn in resumes to recruiters at Boeing, which maintains a strong presence in the region, and Facebook, which was making its first appearance at a Cal State University Long Beach job fair. Continue reading “Looking for a Few Good Candidates”

So You Want to Work at Facebook….

Work at FacebookFacebook, like many Silicon Valley companies, has been pushing hard to create a more diverse workforce. On the heels of its most recent diversity report, which showed only slight improvement, the company has been trying new approaches to create the varied workforce the company sees as key to the success of its products and business.

For years, Facebook recruiters said they visited the same 20 universities to search for new technical talent. But this year, they began reaching out to new educational institutions, including for the first time to California State University Long Beach, where Latinos and Asian American students are the largest ethnic groups. 10 New Full-time Faculty Join College

The CSULB College of Engineering this fall is seeing a major influx of new teaching talent, expanding expertise in important areas such as data analytics, advanced composites, robotics, sustainable energy, smart grids, cognitive radio, transportation planning and distributed systems.

The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) Department accounts for nearly half of the 10 new faculty, while the Computer Engineering and Computer Science (CECS), Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering Technology (CECET), and Electrical Engineering (EE) departments will each gain two full-time tenure-track positions. Boeing Speaker Draws Standing-Room Only Audience

Student Groups Show Off Projects

Heat and humidity didn’t stop Cal State Long Beach students and faculty from showing up for Engineering Welcome Day and hearing about student organizations’ latest projects. Sponsored by the Associated Engineering Student Body (AESB), the Sept. 10 event drew nearly 200 people and featured nearly two dozen tables.

What Mairead Argus appreciates most about the Cal State Long Beach Engineering Honors Program is being in smaller-sized classes with like-minded people. “There’s a sense of community. You’re not just your student ID number,” she says.

The College of Engineering provides free peer tutoring services for Electrical Engineering, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering/Science, and Chemical Engineering courses. Tutors are available Monday – Friday in the Fall and Spring terms. All tutoring sessions take place in Engineering Student Success Center (ESSC) in room EN2-300 between the hours of 9:00am – 6:00pm
