The College of Engineering Thursday celebrated the launch of a new department in the fast-growing field of Biomedical Engineering.
With the introduction of the Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering, CSULB becomes the only CSU in Southern California to offer a standalone degree in this area. Biomedical Engineering graduates will be able to apply their engineering, biology, bioinformatics, and biomechanical knowledge to create artificial organs, prostheses, medical instruments, healthcare management and delivery systems, and more.

David Callis ‘88, a Senior Vice President at Swinerton Builders, and Jeff Goodermote ‘10, director of Parking Structures at Swinerton, received CECEM Distinguished Alumni Awards. CSULB Computer Engineering and Computer Science Chair Burkhard Englert will participate this summer in an initiative to increase the percentage of women and students of color majoring in computer science.
The Building, Recruiting and Inclusion for Diversity (BRAID) initiative was launched three years ago. It is led by the Anita Borg Institute and Harvey Mudd College, in partnership with more than a dozen universities across the nation and the National Center for Women & Information Technology. BRAID is funded by Facebook, Google, Intel, Microsoft, the Computing Research Association, and the National Science Foundation. CSULB has named a new Executive Director for its Antelope Valley Engineering Program, which lets transfer engineering students complete their degrees in just 2 ½ years.
Khalil Dajani, former chair and professor of the Mathematics and Computer Science Department in the College of Science and Engineering at Southern Arkansas University, has replaced Dr. Ken Santarelli, who retired this month. Inventors previously secured patents by documenting that they were the first to conceive of the invention. Now, however, patents are issued to those who file first with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
“An inventor has to file the patent as quickly as possible. It’s who gets to the patent office first,” said Boeing Technical Fellow Wayne Howe, speaking at the second meeting of the CSULB chapter of the National Academy of Inventors.
College of Engineering Dean Forouzan Golshani, the chapter president, said generating and protecting intellectual property is an important aspect of academic life. Emel Demircan, an assistant professor in the CSULB Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering departments, has been awarded a $175,000 grant to advance the understanding of human motor performance to help clinicians develop more effective motion-training treatments.
The National Science Foundation award will fund research to create a cyber-human framework that advances robotics and biomechanics, deepening scientific understanding of human motor performance dictated by musculoskeletal physics and neural control.
“The project has great potential to impact our society by creating a wearable cyber-human system to provide immediate feedback to the wearer to make postural corrections – applicable for the reeducation of patients with musculoskeletal disorders and for performance improvement in motion training,” she said. The Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering Management Department’s Vahid Balali has been named one of the California construction industry’s top young professionals. Balali, who joined CSULB as an assistant professor last fall, was among 20 engineers, architects, entrepreneurs, academics, contractors, and specialty contractors recognized in ENR California’s annual contest.
ENR California’s Top Young Professionals, previously called the Top 20 under 40, “highlights and profiles individuals who represent the best-of-the-best in their fields by giving back to the construction industry and to their communities.” Those recognized lead large-scale projects, supervise diverse teams, improve their communities, and foster teamwork inside and outside their organizations. Despite recent rains, California’s long-term water future remains uncertain. That makes coming up with new ways to reuse water even more critical.
In the CSULB Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering Management Department, Assistant Professor Jin Gi Hong will be designing a sustainable wastewater treatment system for cooling towers. The system would not only improve the towers’ operational efficiency, but potentially help save the CSU system up to 92,400 gallons of water per day.
With a $75,557 grant from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Reclamation, Hong and his two student researchers will design an advanced Zero Liquid Discharge wastewater treatment system for the cooling tower in CSULB’s Central Heating and Cooling Plant. CSULB has many inventors in its midst, from the College of the Arts to the College of Engineering. On Dec. 8, all are invited to attend the first meeting of the newly formed National Academy of Inventors chapter at CSULB.
