| Description | Samples are analyzed by having a soluble sample injected into the system and the GC portion separates molecules out based on their volatility thought a column carried by helium; those with high volatility travel through column quicker than those with a low volatility. The MS is used to detect chemicals by structure, the molecules are blasted with electrons to break up molecules into positive ions, they then travel through a magnetic field that filters the ions by mass as they travel to the mass detector and a mass spectrum is created. |
