Writing Proficiency Requirements

Students can take the Writing Proficiency Exam (WPE) as soon as they complete the General Education category, Written Communication (A1). Students must attempt the WPE by the semester in which they will earn 65 units. Transfer students must attempt the exam in their first semester of attendance. Otherwise, a registration hold will be placed on the student's record.

Free WPE preparation workshops are available one to two weeks before each WPE. A passing score on the WPE is 11, and will satisfy the GWAR policy.

If a student does not meet the passing score, there are several different pathways the student can follow (based on their score). For information on GWAR, please contact the GWAR Advisor at gwar@csulb.edu or 562-985-4837.

Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement

To graduate from CSULB, every student must satisfy the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR). The first step toward this requirement is to complete the Graduate Writing Assessment Requirement Placement Examination (GPE).

Appointments are for CNSM pre-major students only. For fully-declared majors, contact your major advisor.
