Statement of Professional Engagement:

Dr. Fischer's areas of specialization are sentencing and corrections. He studies in-prison and post-prison treatment and programming, offender reentry, and the interactions between sentencing policies, social environments, and offender characteristics. His pedagogical training, research, and teaching have all focused heavily on quantitative research methods and statistical data analysis. Some of his recent research projects have analyzed variation in offender recidivism rates across states and between different sentencing and correctional policy environments. He has also conducted research on the need for and reception of treatment by inmates in state prisons, including evaluations of post-prison substance abuse treatment programs.
