Components of a NIH Application and Review Process
This event will include a video presentation by Dr. Bastani available to participants 1 week prior to the webinar. Additional information, and questions from event participants will be addressed during the 1 hour webinar.
Participants will:
- Become familiar with the mechanisms and submission process for NIH research funding applications.
- Identify strategies to facilitate review of your application
- Have an opportunity to pose questions to an experienced NIH researcher and reviewer.
Who should attend?
This event is designed to meet the needs of early career faculty (within 10 years of receiving their doctoral degree) from minority serving institutions (MSIs) interested in conducting health disparities research. While priority will be given to faculty from MSIs, early career faculty from non-MSI institutions may register. Enrollment is limited.

Dr. Roshan Bastani, is a Social/Health Psychologist and Professor of Health Policy and Management, Director of the UCLA Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Equity, Director of the Center for Prevention Research UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, Director of Cancer Disparities Research, and Associate Director of Cancer Prevention and Control, Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, UCLA.
Her research focuses on disease prevention and control among disadvantaged groups and has had continuous funding from the NIH since 1988.
For 15 years Dr. Bastani led an NIH-funded research career development program, for junior faculty and post-doctoral scientists, and served 11 years as Associate Dean for Research in the UCLA School of Public Health. She has also served on numerous NIH review committees.
