JOSEPH KALMAN, PHD
Dr. Kalman runs the Solid Propulsion and Combustion Lab (SPACL). We focus on understanding the combustion and ignition processes mostly with experimental means, but some theoretical modeling where appropriate. As part of the BUILD program, students will be using and helping develop ways to measure pollutants from combustion experiments. We are also focusing on understanding how the microstructure of polymers influences the generation of soot (i.e. smoke particles which provide a potential health/pollutant concern).
Students will gain experience working in the laboratory which will involve designing experiments/equipment, machining, building simple instrumentation circuitry, using optics/lasers for measurements as well as skills associated with data processing (e.g. uncertainty analysis, image processing, etc.)
