This research project examines characteristics of probation officers (PO) and parole agents (PA), including issues surrounding gender, longevity in job, approach in supervising violent offenders, job stress, workplace violence, violence with parolees, and utilization of respect, rapport, and gendered adaptations in interactions with parolees and the public.
The research involves qualitative interviews of POs PAs, review of records, examination of social artifacts, and collection of oral histories involving gender, job stress, and violence.
BUILD Scholars on this project will contribute to literature reviews and learn methodological skills, including field research and qualitative interviewing techniques, as well as qualitative and quantitative analysis. The project is expected to yield at least 3 presentations at academic conferences, 3 peer-reviewed publications, all of which will be collaborative between BUILD Mentors and Scholars (student will present at conferences and publish).
Travel is possible but not required.
