Feminist Witchcraft
                                 A Transformatory Politics
                                                                   by Susan Greenwood

Anthropologist Susan Greenwood is a Research Fellow in the Department of Sociology and
Anthropology at Goldsmiths College, University of London, where she lectures in anthropology, shamanism and women’s studies.  Her research focuses on British paganism and environmentalism.  She is the author of several chapters and scholarly articles, as well as the book Magic, Witchcraft and the Otherworld: An Anthropology , that focuses on issues of
identity, gender and morality,

Women who practice Goddess Spirituality tend to emphasize healing.  In her chapter, Greenwood points out that this concept of healing implies that there is a self independent of cultural conditioning to heal.  She finds the claim of feminist Witchcraft to offer women the possibility of finding the true self - the authentic being they would have been had patriarchy not existed - a problematic one.  She holds it is a response to the postmodern condition, because any meaning of “self” must be a cultural one.  Her research on and experience in British Witchcraft presented in her chapter  illustrate a different approach to healing in the search for a “reclaimed” post-patriarchal identity
