Requirements for the Course

Spring 2002

The goal of the Information Competency for the Discipline of Black Studies grant funded by the California State University (CSU) system is to provide discipline-based faculty members with the knowledge and skills they need to incorporate information competence principles into their coursework. Using information learned from two formal meetings and an online tutorial Black Studies faculty members will revise an assignment and/or redesign teaching materials to meet core information competencies defined by the CSU and the University Library.

Full participation in the project includes:

  • Attending group sessions on April 2 (1:00-4:00) and April 18 (2:00–5:00), University Library, Spidell classroom.
  • Completing readings from the Information Competency for the Discipline of Black Studies Reader.
  • Completing Pre- and Post- tests.
  • Reading of the online tutorial over a two-week period (April 2-April 18)
  • Completing 3 Assignments in the online tutorial which include:
    • Writing ‘Reflections’ of 300-500 words
    • Redesigning of an existing assignment

The expected learning outcomes will be improved information competency skills for Black Studies faculty and the integration of information competency skills into, at least, one class assignment.
