Research Interest:

High Energy/Particle Physics, Astro Physics, Cosmology, Phenomenology of non-Perturbative QCD and Particle Production

This is an important era for the field of subatomic particles. We are beginning to be able to investigate effects not included in the Standard Model. A connection among the fields of HEP and cosmology and astro-physics is being made, as it is believed that the nature of the dark matter is a new type of particle. This may be a stable supersymetric entity.

In this era of LHC (Large hadron Collider at CERN), the possibilities of studying Dark Matter, Supersymetry, Supergravity, and Superstrings may be at reach.

Another aspect of the HEP is the studies of Neutrinos. There are many new experiments devoted to this field.

My research contributions to the above fields have been done in various universities and national labs. Below is a short summary:

Research10/80 – 01/2008

  • UCLA; Hadronization studies (Babar)            10/02 – 2008

            Phenomenology of hadron production; Space-Time Area Law model for meson hadronization.
            Principal author of one refereed publication, plus many collective Babar papers.

  • Caltech; CMS & LIGO                        01/02 – 07/02 & 06/01 – 08/01  

            Development of a pattern recognition algorithm in C++ for po rejection for CMS project.
            Contribution to LIGO software (mostly on Unix systems).

  • Fermilab; Do Collaboration            05/88 – 09/94

            Top quark search and discovery.
            Treatments of muon tracks in the whole detector.
            Algorithms for isolated and fake leptons.
            Top quark mass limit based on Bayesian probability analysis with dependencies in all decay channels.
            Principal author of one conference paper plus many collective papers.

  • Argonne National Lab; SSC project            11/87 – 05/88

            Simulations for a proposed SSC Calorimeter.
            Final analysis of HRS data and publication of a review article (W/M. Derrick).

  • HRS Collaboration; 15 GeV e+e- annihilation at SLAC            02/85 – 11/87

            First observation of scalar and tensor mesons in this field.
            Observation and yield calculation of several other particles and their relevance to models.
            Data analysis software development.
            Official calculation of integrated luminosity and maintenance of its hardware & electronics.
            Principal author of several refereed publications plus many collective papers.

  • LBNL; 2.1 GeV/nucleon heavy ion collisions            10/80 – 01/85

            Detector design & simulation.
            Introduction of new data analysis procedures and charge identification method.
            Techniques for combining upperlimits.
            Techniques for accounting for noise effects in pulse height distributions and simulations.
            Observation of the first p candidate below threshold at above energies.
            Principal author of one refereed publication plus several collective papers.

Yohannes Abate: new faculty member of the department of Physics and AstronomyPrashanth Jaikumar: New faculty member at the department of Physics & Astronomy

Dr. Abate (left) is a condensed matter experimentalist, who graduated from the University of Iowa. His interests are in near-field microscopy and spectroscopy imaging in metals and semiconductors, plasmonics in nanoparticles and the physics of metamaterials.

Dr. Jaikumar is a nuclear astrophysicist who graduated from SUNY at Stony Brooks. His interests are in high-density matter and its relation to astrophysical phenomena in neutron stars.
