Martin Herman's music combines lyricism, cabaret, elements of minimalism, and interactive uses of technology. These elements are bound together to create theatrical work that weds live performers and singers with computer processed sound and video. The L.A. Times has called his music "richly fascinating" and "dazzling".

Martin Herman trained in the Paris studios of Pierre Boulez and Iannis Xenakis. Last season the California E.A.R. Unit commissioned and then performed his Ring Zone on LACMA's New Music Series. His The Fractal Bow has been performed both by the Long Beach Symphony and by Sacramento's Camelia Symphony Orchestra. His opera, The Scarlet Letter, has been performed by the Berkeley Contemporary Opera and at the Carpenter Center. Art Bark was recently performed by the group, Arc Ensemble, at the New Music Exposition of the Czech Republic's "Moravia Autumn Festival".
