Guidelines

Check with the Graduate Advisor before enrolling to make sure if and how courses will count toward your program.

You must comply with the University Regulations Governing the Master's Degree. In particular, you must:

Complete at least seventy percent (70%) of the required units in the degree program at CSULB in matriculated status or as approved graduate credit earned as a senior.
Complete at least seventy percent (70%) of the minimum units required for the program of study in courses at the 500 and 600 levels.

Cost and Enrollment

Check with the specific institutions for costs and enrollment instructions. Some of these programs are expensive.

Transferring Units

Check with the Graduate Advisor before enrolling to make sure if and how courses will count toward your program.
CAUTION: Units taken at universities that are on the quarter (vs. semester) system will be transferred at the rate of 2/3 CSULB units per external unit.
After completing the course, send a copy of the transcript to the graduate advisor and an original transcript to Enrollment Services. Check with Enrollment Services for specific procedures.

1. How can I know whether units will transfer as quarter or semester units?

The best thing to do is to call the university or check its website/catalog. You can also check College Source Online, though how to count units is ultimately left to the discretion of CSULB Enrollment Services. Using College Source: After you find a university, click on the icon to the left of the school name that looks like a university building College Profile

. Make sure "Calendar System" says "Semester" (sometimes it says something ambiguous there). If you click on the Key icon Transcript Key

in the top right, you can find the transcript key -- there is sometimes additional information there.

2. How can I know whether a university is accredited?

The best thing to do is to call the university or check its website/catalog. You can also check College Source Online: follow the instructions above. After clicking on the building icon, make sure it says "ACCREDITED" next to "Regional Accreditation Status."

3. Can I use units for the Masters program for courses that I took before entering the MS program?

Here are some guidelines:

The courses must be appropriate to the program.
You may not complete more than 9 units outside of the program.
You may only count a course you took as an undergraduate if it was flagged on your transcript as "reserved" for graduate credit.
Post-baccalaureate work may only count if the units were not used to complete another program. Though, coursework for a certificate program may count in some cases.
Please contact the graduate advisor for clarification about the eligibility of specific coursework.

Summer and Online Courses

Remember to check with the Graduate Advisor before enrolling to make sure if and how courses will count toward your program. Provide the following information: link to course information, syllabus (if available), number of units, graduate or undergraduate level, semester or quarter units.

At or Near CSULB

The CSULB Department of Mathematics & Statistics rarely offers grad or upper division MATH/MTED/STAT courses during the summer that would count toward the program. There's no harm in checking the summer schedule, though.
CSULB's College of Education often offers summer and online courses that could count as an elective for the program.
CSUF often has summer offerings that could count for the program. Check their schedules when they become available.
