CALL REPORT DATA

From this page you can download aggregate and regional quarterly bank data from 1976:1 (or 1977:1) to 2004:2. The data are constructed from the Consolidated Reports of Condition and Income (Call Reports). We report

  • data for the national economy (level and index series),
  • data for the nine census regions (index series), and
  • data for the 50 states and the District of Columbia (index series).

The index series correct for mergers to ensure that no jumps in the data occur when, for example, banks from different regions merge or a bank goes bankrupt. More information on this and other issues can be found in the

    Data Manual

The data manual also compares the loan data from the Call Reports with the loan data made available by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System (H.8 data). The Call Report data are of better quality since they are based on a comprensive survey of banks operating in the US, while the H.8 is based on voluntary surveys.

  • Old Data:

We have updated the data twice since we initially posted the data on this site. The first update was because the Chicago Fed updated and corrected the merger file. This led to some very minor changes. The second update was to extend the sample period through the second quarter of 2004. The data from the first update, downloaded from the Chicago Fed website on April  21st 2002, are still available at the links below.
