Research involving more than 800 university alumni has shown that students who graduate from departments that send students to technical communication courses typically spend over 20% of their time at work writing and that the ability to write well is important to their jobs and to advancement in their careers. The purpose of English 317 is to teach the writing strategies and skills that you'll need in order to write successfully in your career. Accordingly, in this course you'll learn how to do the following:

  • Take a reader-centered approach to writing
  • Define your objectives
  • Plan your writing
  • Draft your writing
  • Evaluate your writing
  • Revise your writing

You'll also learn how to do the following tasks:

  • Use conventional formats for letters, memos, and larger communications
  • Use conventional formats for citing your sources
  • Use conventional structural patterns (superstructures) for resumes, instructions, reports, and proposals
  • Review and recommend improvements in other people's drafts
  • Write ethically
  • Work effectively as a member of a writing team

It is my teaching philosophy to treat all students with respect, encourage learning forms of technical communication and their relations with other disciplines, provide a fun and safe learning environment, and enthusiastically instruct students on real-world applications of academic concepts and theories.
