LONG BEACH, Calif. (December 1, 2015) – From Sunday-Thursday, Dec. 6-10, California State University, Long Beach’s (CSULB) School of Art will celebrate the 49th year of its Holiday Art Sale as students and faculty from its nationally recognized visual arts programs provide a special holiday shopping opportunity for lovers of art and fine crafts.
“The appeal of handmade goods is in their idiosyncratic nature, connection to cultural history and tradition,” said School of Art professor Tony Marsh. “This sale gives people the chance to obtain original handmade art with funds raised going to support student scholarship and travel.”
Hundreds of unique pieces will be on display and available for purchase in the student galleries. Students and faculty members participate in the sale, with a significant percentage of the proceeds going to support scholarships, guest speakers, supplies and individual program needs. The sale officially begins at 4 p.m. on Dec. 6.
Original works showcase the diverse and comprehensive programs offered through the School of Art, from photography to fiber, ceramics to illustration, metals to jewelry and features work for every taste and every budget. Prices for individual pieces are expected to range from $25 to $500.
Sale hours are Dec. 6, from 4-7 p.m. and Dec. 7-10, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., with hours being extended until 7 p.m. on Dec. 9. Historically, patrons begin lining up two to three hours prior to the opening of the sale in order to ensure the best selection of these one-of-a-kind objects. Cash, check and Visa are accepted forms of payment.
Marsh, a member of the university since 1988 and head of the campus’ ceramics program, thinks there are two reasons for the sale’s 49-year longevity: handmade art and the people who want it.
The Holiday Art Sale takes place in the department galleries and courtyard, located in between the Fine Arts 2 and Fine Arts 3 buildings on the southeastern section of the campus. Parking for the sale is available in Lot 8, off East University Drive. From the parking lots, patrons are asked to follow the directional signs leading to the sale.
