LONG BEACH, Calif. (Feb. 3, 2015) — California State University, Long Beach today announced the appointment of Michael Uhlenkamp as the executive director of media and digital news. Uhlenkamp will engage in strategic planning and manage the day-to-day operations of the university’s Office of Media. He will begin his duties on Monday, Feb. 16, 2015.
“Mike is a welcome addition to our media relations team,” said Terri M. Carbaugh, associate vice president of external relations. “He brings extensive knowledge of the inner workings of the California State University and he will serve as a credible source for members of local, state and national media. Equally important, as a proud member of our alumni, Mike knows his way around campus and is familiar with student-life.”
Uhlenkamp currently serves as the director of public affairs for the California State University (CSU) Office of the Chancellor where he has held a leadership position for nearly five years. While at the chancellor’s office, he has led a pro-active media relations program, participating in more than 1,000 on-record interviews with print, radio and TV outlets. He also led an aggressive issues management program by working closely with the state and federal government offices of the CSU, the largest system of senior higher education in the country.

Uhlenkamp will work closely with President Jane Close Conoley and he will manage a small team of media relations specialists and a b-roll videographer. He will oversee CSULB’s News@theBeach and InsideCSULB. The Office of Media Relations is housed within the Department of Legislative and External Relations and the Division of University Relations and Development.
Uhlenkamp’s prior experience includes leadership positions in professional sports with the Auto Club Speedway, San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Lakers and in consumer goods with Reebok. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Southern California and a Master of Business Administration from Cal State Long Beach.
