Men’s water polo coach Gavin Arroyo was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year for the second time since 2007, when he was co-coach of the year.
Arroyo, in his seventh season at Long Beach State, led the men’s 49er team to its first MPSF Tournament appearance since 2008, finishing 2-1 and taking fifth place. Arroyo also led the 49ers to their second-best finish in program history with a 24-8 record, including a 4-4 mark in conference play.
The team’s success led the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches to name players Dan Matulis to second-team All-American honors and Spencer White and Nick Rascon as honorable mentions. This is the 18th consecutive year that 49er men’s water polo players have earned All-American recognition.
Earlier, Matulis earned second-team All-MPSF honors while White, Rascon, Nolan McConnell, Milos Vrzic and Balint Meszaros earned honorable mention.
Arroyo continues his success with the women’s team, ranked No. 9 by the Collegiate Water Polo Association as the team entered Big West conference play.
