The first Los Angeles-area student-programmed radio station to sign onto terrestrial free air in nearly 40 years launched in February when CSULB’s KBeach began broadcasting on high definition radio at 88.1 FM HD-3, reaching the greater Los Angeles basin.
KBeach, which is affiliated with CSULB’s Associated Students Inc., has been broadcasting on the Internet since 1998. The on-air opportunity comes through an agreement with the CSULB Research Foundation, station owner, and Global Jazz Inc., which manages 88.1 KKJZ FM. Global Jazz Inc. is the last independently owned-and-operated broadcast entity in the Southern California radio market, Lemos said. With KBeach signing onto the air, Global Jazz President Saul Levine paves a potential career pathway for young broadcasters in the nation’s second largest radio market.
