Keith S. Allen (2000, B.S., criminal justice; 2006, MPA) and Gina (Garcia) Allen (2003, B.A., recreation; 2008 MPA) welcomed their first child, Hannah Estelle Allen, on June 22, 2012.

In Memoriam

Arthur M. Alexrad, professor emeritus, English, died Jan. 15 at age 78. He joined the campus in 1964 and became emeritus in 1996. He later taught in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, was a University Art Museum docent and volunteered with animal care organizations.

Francis L. (Frank) Christ, counselor emeritus, Counseling and Psychological Services, died at age 89 on Dec. 11 in Sierra Vista, Ariz. At CSULB, he created the first Learning Assistance Center that became a model for other CSU campuses. He retired in 1990.

Mihir K. Das, professor emeritus, mechanical and aerospace engineering, died Dec. 3 at age 73. He became associate dean of engineering in 1978 and developed the joint Ph.D. program in engineering and industrial mathematics with Claremont Graduate University, among other programs. He became emeritus in 2008.

Young Jin Choe Everett (Suzie Jin Everett) (1999, B.A., liberal studies–multicultural studies) died Dec. 7 at age 36 in Long Beach.

Joyce M. Flocken (1962, B.A., art; 1963, B.A.; 1965, M.A., speech communication) died Jan. 2 at age 73 in Yorba Linda. A professor of speech communication at Cal State Fullerton, she served as department chair and chair of its Academic Senate.

Philip G. Grignon (1958, B.A.; 1962, M.A., social science) died Oct. 3 at age 82 in San Diego. The longtime educator in Orange and San Diego counties helped found the Marine Studies Institute in Dana Point.

Judith C. Kelleher (1985, M.S., nursing), died at 89 on Jan. 24 in Stockton. The long-time nurse was co-founder and first president of what became the international Emergency Nurses Association.

Jose Lopez, professor emeritus, Chicano and Latino Studies, died Nov. 18 at age 72. He joined the campus in 1970 and became emeritus in 2001. He was an expert on juvenile gangs and worked with anti-gang programs.

Frank M. Pooler, professor emeritus, music, died Jan. 19 at age 88. He joined the campus in 1959, becoming head of choral music before retiring in 1988. He worked with CSULB alums Karen and Richard Carpenter and earned an award from King Olaf of Norway for supporting Scandinavian music.

Harvey M. Rose (1968, B.A., psychology) died Aug. 23 at age 66 in Ridgecrest, where he was retired as its city manager. He also was city manager for Eureka and in Colorado and a university administrator in Ohio and Florida.

Owen E. Swanson (1972, B.S., geology) died Oct. 1 at age 74 in Wilmington, N.C.
