She was known for her service to the university during his tenure as president from 1970 to 1988, and later supported his work as a member of Congress from 1993 to 2003.

At CSULB, she was instrumental in attracting community support and cultivating major gifts to the campus including the Isabel Patterson Child Development Center, president’s home, International House student residence, Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden and Martha Knoebel Dance Theater. She also was active with the Fine Arts Affiliates and the International Community Council.
In the community, she chaired the Long Beach Unified School District’s committee on desegregation guidelines and the magnet school plan in 1979, and served for 10 years on the district’s Personnel Commission.

She also was president of Long Beach’s Public Corporation for the Arts and served on the boards of numerous organizations including the California Community Foundation, Family Service of Long Beach, and Todd Cancer Institute at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.

In 2003, her role at CSULB and in the community was honored when the North Campus Library was renamed the Steve and Nini Horn Center by the Trustees of the California State University.
