In Touch–Marriages, Births, In Memoriam


Geoffrey K. Bechtel (2007, B.A., sociology) and Elizabeth Cox were married June 23 at Fairmont Park in Riverside. He is an officer with the Harrisonburg, Va., Police Department.

Gail Tsang (2002, B.S., business administration–management information systems) and Grover Trask III were married Sept. 15 at the Mission Inn in Riverside. She is a nurse practitioner at UC Irvine.


M. Suzanne Hessel Aakre (2000, B.A., history) and her husband, Thomas Aakre, welcomed their new baby, Connor, to their family on July 24. Suzanne is employed by the Disney Co. in Anaheim.

Sheryl Mauricio (2001, B.S., biology) and her husband, James C. Williams (2002, B.A., Black studies) had a daughter, Gabrielle Sebastiana Williams, on July 11, 2011 in Hawaii. The couple lives in Michigan.

In Memoriam

George V. Betar, professor emeritus, English, died March 24 in Ivins, Utah, at the age of 82. He came to the campus in 1963 and became emeritus in 1981.

Michael Carney, professor of music and director of percussion studies, died June 14 at age 59 in Long Beach. He joined the campus in 1981 and taught, conducted and performed extensively across the U.S. and abroad.

Walter B. Crawford, professor emeritus, English, died May 6 at age 93 in Westminster. He joined the campus in 1963 and became emeritus in 1985.

Bruce M. Englehardt (1969, B.A., English literature) died May 2 in Santa Cruz at age 67. He was a musician who played with a number of major jazz and blues artists and at music festivals.

Dorothy Fornia, professor emerita, physical education and gerontology, died Sept. 21 at age 94 in Long Beach. She joined the campus in 1956 and became emerita in 1992. In addition to teaching in physical education, she was coordinator of graduate studies, director of the Gerontology Program and a founding member of Senior University.

Michael J. Griswold (1966, B.A., physical education) died April 15 at age 66 in Guatemala. He was retired as a longtime coach, teacher and former athletic director at Santa Monica High.

Charles D. Hamburger, professor emeritus, management/human resources management, died Feb. 24 at the age of 79. He joined the faculty in 1965 and became emeritus in 1996.

Dr. James O. Morse, former director of CSULB Student Health Services, died Sept. 3, 2011 at age 81 in Morro Bay. He served the university from 1976 until the early 1990s and his four children, Thomas, Kathleen, David and Mary, are CSULB alumni.

Ethel Anne (Massey) Morton (1952, B.A.; 1953, M.A., music) died at age 83 on Feb. 23 in Placerville. She was a professional musician and later a school librarian.

James A. Neal (1976, B.A.; 1983, M.A., psychology), former director of CSULB Testing Services, died March 25. He also worked in the Career Development Center and the Division of Student Services.

Elsie Neary (1955, B.A., sociology) died Sept. 22, 2011, at the age of 89 in Aptos. Among her work, she was a bookbinder for the UC Press and at Stanford University and was a community volunteer.

Helen Newcastle, professor emerita, education, died April 9 in Huntington Beach. She joined the campus in 1969 and became emerita in 2000.

Ralph C. Perez (1994, B.A., history) died April 10 in Santa Ana at age 96. He was a retired plumber and was involved in a variety of community organizations.

Gary L. Peters, professor emeritus, geography, died Sept. 4 in Paso Robles. He joined Cal State Long Beach in 1971, where he taught for 30 years and also served as department chair and associate dean before returning to his alma mater of CSU Chico to complete his academic career.

Susan M. Plesko (1972, B.A.; 1975, M.A., English literature) died Jan. 30 at age 66 in Denver, Colo. She taught English and literature at colleges and high schools, most recently in Moreno Valley. She is survived by her husband, Forrest Plesko (1972, B.A., art).

Lee Robert Powers (1957, M.A., physical education) died Jan. 30 at age 78 in Downey. He was a high school coach and teacher and retired as principal of the ABC Unified School District Adult School.

Glenda G. Razor (1983 M.A., vocational education) died at age 75 on May 5 in Laguna Niguel. She had taught in Louisburg, Kan., and Santa Ana and Saddleback High Schools.

Donald F. Reed, former 49er head football and men’s golf coach, died April 9 at age 91. He coached football from 1958 to 1968 and golf from 1975 to 1980 and was an inaugural member of the 49er Athletic Hall of Fame.

Patricia (Robinson) Reep (1980, B.A., economics) died March 13 at age 56 in Los Angeles. She was involved in a number of Long Beach organizations.

Robert L. Romano, staff emeritus, Student Services, died June 23 at age 86 in Georgetown, Ky. He was a building engineer for Student Housing from 1968 to 1990.

Norma (Byron) Stevens (1981, M.S., nursing) died March 9 at age 89 in Santa Maria. She was retired as a senior social services case manager for Santa Barbara County.

Herbert H. Tyrnauer, professor emeritus, design, died in October. He joined the campus in 1961 and was a past chair of the Design Department and a Fellow of the Industrial Designers Society of America.
