Before Commencement

  1. Receive ticket from commencement participant
    • Because of the volume of graduates at the largest ceremonies (Health & Human Services, Liberal Arts, Arts, and Business), each guest is required to have a ticket. Each student will receive a maximum of eight (8) tickets so that all attendees have a pleasant experience.
  2. Mark the date and time of your student's commencement ceremony
    • This information will be printed on the ticket provided to you by the student
  3. Book a Hotel (Optional)
  4. Guests with Special Needs
    • The walk from the parking areas to the Commencement site is uphill and requires approximately 30-45 minutes. Please contact the Office of Parking and Transportation Services for assistance and directions to special parking lots and drop off locations: 562.985.4146.
    • The University does not provide wheelchairs; guests must bring their own. There is not a separate seating area for guests in wheelchairs and the university does not reserve seating for any guests. Please arrive well before the start of the ceremony to allow enough time for the ceremony staff to lend assistance. For elderly guests and others who are unable to sit outside, the ceremonies will be broadcast live indoors at a location adjacent to the ceremony site.
    • Please contact Disabled Student Services at 562.985.5401 if you would like more information on amenities for senior or disabled guests.
    • Please contact the Commencement Coordinator for your ceremony, if you have questions or concerns about attendance.

During Commencement

  1. Directions to CSULB
  2. Parking
    • Free parking is offered to the public at any of the parking structures and student parking lots on lower campus during the ceremonies. The lots on upper campus designated for faculty and staff will remain gated.
  3. Arrive at least one hour early
    • It is recommended that guests arrive at least one hour prior to the ceremony, allowing for 60 minutes to park and walk to the ceremony site. Dress should be appropriate for walking and sitting outdoors for two hours.
  4. Seating
    • For all ceremonies, seating is available on a first-come, first-seated basis, in folding chairs and grandstands. Most guests will be sitting in the sun. Eeah person attending the ceremony will need a ticket, including children. If you plan on bringing small children, it is recommended that you view the ceremony in the live-streaming room which will not require tickets. Note: TICKETS ARE ALSO REQUIRED FOR RE-ENTRY TO THE VENUE. PLEASE SEE AN USHER BEFORE EXITING.
    • Strollers: It is recommended that you leave any strollers outside the venue. Designated stroller areas will be available at the site. Please see an usher for stroller locations.
    • Web Streaming Rooms: Each ceremony will broadcast LIVE in multiple rooms on the campus. Banners will clearly mark designated web-streaming locations the day of the ceremony. These rooms are open to everyone and are on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets are not required to watch the ceremony from a live-streaming room.
  5. Ceremony
    • Each ceremony will begin with a processional of graduates, faculty, and university officials. The Dean will welcome the audience, give instructions, and recognize outstanding graduates.
    • The ceremony will last approximately two hours long.
    • Guests should exit the same entrance they came in through.
  6. Gifts for Graduates
    • Flowers & Leis: CSULB Alumni Association volunteers will be selling beautiful mixed bouquets and orchid leis at graduation. You can help support the Alumni Association's programs by purchasing flowers at the alumni tent in the central quad.
    • University Bookstore: The university bookstore will have a tent set up during commencement where guests can purchase balloons, bears, cards and other items for graduates.

After Commencement

  1. Optional Reception
    • An optional hour-long reception immediately follows each ceremony. Refreshments and live music will be provided for you and your guests at the reception.
  2. Photo Opportunity
    • There are several popular places around campus that are great for photos such as Walter Pyramid, the Japanese Garden, and the Lymon Lough Fountain in Maxson Plaza.
  3. Leaving Campus
    • We recommend that guests avoid entering the 405 Freeway from 7th Street due to high traffic congestion. Alternative routes are at Palo Verde Avenue and Bellflower Boulevard from which both the 405 North and South can be accessed.
