DOCENT / VOLUNTEER COUNCIL
The University Art Museum Docent / Volunteer Council provides key support to the Museum and its education programs. The Council reinforces the Museum’s commitment to providing all visitors—students, seniors, adults, and children—regardless of how much previous exposure to art they have had, with a positive experience and an opportunity to engage with contemporary art on a variety of levels. All docents and volunteers attend the Docent / Volunteer Council class, held most Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The class, led by Interim Curator of Education Christina Alegria, is a dynamic learning environment where docents and volunteers study presentation skills and art history as well as art education and contemporary art theory. In addition, docents visit regional museums, galleries, and art centers.
University Art Museum docents provide meaningful tours for CSULB students, K−12 school classes, and community groups interested in visiting the UAM.
BECOMING A DOCENT
The University Art Museum’s Docent / Volunteer Council is always looking for enthusiastic volunteers who want to learn more about contemporary art. If you have an interest in art, a love of learning, and are willing to share what you learn with children and adults who visit the Museum, then this is the place for you. A formal background in visual art is not required.
UNIVERSITY ART MUSEUM ADVISORY BOARD
The UAMAB is dedicated to long−range planning, advocacy, and developing resources for the museum. Volunteers who would like a deep and satisfying participation with the museum might consider joining the board. Advisory board members are required to attend meetings and an annual retreat, provide a significant annual contribution, engage in fundraising activities, act as an advocate for the UAM on− and off−campus, work with staff on strategic planning, and attend events and receptions. The advisory board members help shape policy, examine museum issues, plan events, and reach out to potential donors and friends of the museum. Possible members express interest to the UAMAB president and UAM director. Their candidacy is reviewed and approved by the entire membership.
