LBFD Honors CSULB Pair

A Letter of Appreciation was recently presented to CSULB by the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) at its 35th Annual Meritorious Awards Luncheon at the Long Beach Convention Center. The LBFD is celebrating its 110th anniversary.

The letter recognized CSULB’s Learning Assistance Center (LAC), specifically Diane Eisenberg and Patrick Mulleavy, two of its learning skills specialists.

“We’re proud of the honor bestowed on the university because of their efforts, and grateful that the LBFD chose to recognize Diane and Pat personally for their years of community service,” said Gen M. Ramirez, director of the LAC. “We teach students that good learning strategies aren’t just for college, but are lifelong professional and personal tools. This project is a great example of that reality.”

“It was pretty amazing how many people were there,” said Mulleavy of the luncheon. “It was quite an event.”

Eisenberg and Mulleavy were recognized for their generosity by providing study skills assistance to recruits as they have prepared to take a variety of exams along with giving time management workshops.

“They recognized that some of their captains and engineers were having trouble passing their exams because they are quite rigorous,” said Mulleavy, noting they have aided approximately 125 firefighters in the past three years. “They asked about study skills, we devised something for them and went over on the weekends and a number of them came over here once every two weeks for several months and we would do one-on-one with them.”

“It’s a little scary because they put their faith in your hands,” said Eisenberg, noting that firefighters must learn a whole new set of skills in a compressed period of time. “They have to pass the written part before they can move on. Now, every year we go in and talk with the new recruits to let them know this is available and we also do a time management session with them.”
