Campus To Celebrate Veterans Day Nov. 10

Published: November 3, 2015

President Jane Close Conoley and Director of Veterans Services Marshall Thomas will host CSULB’s annual Veterans Day Celebration, honoring our nation’s veterans and service members, as well as the more than 550 student veterans currently enrolled on campus. The event will take place Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. at the Speakers Platform in front of the University Bookstore. The national anthem will be performed by the CSULB University Choir and the campus’ ROTC Color Guard will open the ceremony.

“The Beach proudly serves a large and diverse population of veterans and service members. Providing resources to ensure they have an excellent educational experience is a priority,” said Conoley.

A couple of ways the campus assists veterans is through its VET NET Ally seminars, which helps create a welcoming and supportive environment for military service members and veterans who study at CSULB; and Counseling and Psychological Services, which provides assistance to not only veterans, but to their children who are enrolled students at CSULB as well.

Thomas will serve as master of ceremonies at the event and David Joseph, a clinical psychologist and director of the Oakland Vet Center, will speak to the importance of saying thank you to veterans. In addition, there will be a ceremonial signing of an MOU, acknowledging a partnership between CSULB and Long Beach City College in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, in which a VA-appointed counselor serves and supports the student veteran population on both campuses.

Additional veterans’ related activities leading up to the Veterans’ Day Celebration event will include a VET NET Ally seminar—where faculty, staff and the community can learn about student veterans—on Friday, Nov. 6, at The Pointe in The Pyramid from 8 a.m.-noon; a Veterans Day 5K run beginning at The Beach Circle at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7; and the screening of the documentary “Restrepo” on Monday, Nov. 9, beginning at 11 a.m. in The Beach Auditorium located in the University Student Union.
