Neil Hultgren, English, presented a paper titled “Melodrama’s Reversals” as part of a Global Melodrama roundtable at the annual North American Victorian Studies Association Conference held in Honolulu in July.

Ingrid Martin, Marketing, with colleagues organized and led a roundtable on “The Tipping Point: Going from Adaptive to Maladaptive Consumption Behavior Patterns” at the Marketing and Public Policy Conference in Washington, D.C., June 3-6. The focus of the roundtable was on better understanding what factors serve to “tip” consumers into over-consumption, essentially from adaptive to maladaptive consumption. For example, how does a person go from playing online video games occasionally to engaging in this behavior on a continual basis to the point that it detrimentally impacts one’s life?

Victor Rodriguez, Chicano and Latino Studies, served as Editor of The Hispanic American Leadership: A Reference Guide published by Mission Bell Media, June. In addition, an article analyzing Puerto Rico’s current colonial and economic crisis titled “Puerto Rico’s Economic and Fiscal Crisis: Manufactured by the US” was published by Dissident Voice newsletter on July 1 and was reproduced in Counterpunch on July 3. Rodriguez was interviewed by Washington Post reporter Michael Fletcher for an article published July 9 that dealt with the same theme. A series of radio interviews followed, with Selena Hill from New York City radio station WHCR’s program “Let Your Voice Be Heard” and Utrice Leid from Progressive Network News who interviewed him on July 22. The Real News digital video website did a two-part series based on his interview on the Puerto Rican debt crisis on July 14 and July 24. Finally his Op Ed article titled “Puerto Rico’s Crisis? Let’s Look At Our U.S. History” was published online by NBC News on Aug. 6.

Shira Tarrant, Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies, saw the publication of her new book Gender, Sex and Politics: In the Streets and Between the Sheets in the 21st Century by Routledge in July.
