A Jewel Of A Night

Published: April 1, 2015

On Saturday, May 2, The Walter Pyramid will hold the 21st annual Jewels of the Night festivities. Hosted by the Beach Athletic Club, the fundraising division within the Long Beach State Athletics Department, this is the marquee event for generating revenue to support the more than 350 student-athletes in their quest to realize both their academic and athletic ambitions.

The Jewels of the Night committee, headed by Kalim Rayburn and Eric Johnson, has set even higher expectations than last year. Both huge Long Beach State Athletics supporters, they have continued to grow a team whose solid foundation is built via representation from the essential areas of Long Beach and its greater community. Drawing from the Long Beach community, a base of strong local alumni, and numerous faculty, staff and coaches, the committee is a diverse group of individuals providing valuable knowledge, leadership and experience. There will be an array of unique auction items up for bid to go along with a wide variety of food from local eateries and enjoyable live entertainment.

Reservations can be made in advance on the Jewels of the Night website. On the day of the event, doors will open at 5 p.m. and the festivities will continue until 10 p.m.

More than 25 of Long Beach’s most popular restaurants will be on hand to serve some of their famous dishes in an energetic and classy setting, complete with wine tastings, craft beer and a hosted bar. Several restaurants scheduled to be in attendance include Parker’s Lighthouse, Spaghettini, Naples Rib Company, Polly’s Gourmet Coffee, The Boathouse, Rossmoor Pastries, The Attic, La Strada, The Auld Dubliner Irish Pub and Restaurant and Legends Sports Bar.

In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to purchase some once-in-a-lifetime items and experiences during the evening. Auction items include meet-and-greets with former Dirtbags and current Major League Baseball stars, and trips to memorable destinations around the world.

Additional prizes available at the event will be available through an opportunity drawing. Some of last year’s items included a fully stocked wine refrigerator, two JetBlue tickets for any domestic flight, a $500 shopping spree at South Coast Plaza, an iPad Air Wifi, an iPad mini with retina display 16G Wifi, a 50-inch television and certificates to local eateries and premium wine packages. This year’s items have not yet been determined but will be similar to those listed above.
