CCPE Celebrates 40 Years

Published: September 15, 2011

The College of Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE) at CSULB is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, hosting special lectures, sponsored events and a fall reception that will include honoring some of the college’s prominent students. CCPE works closely with other CSULB colleges and industry partners to create innovative degree and professional development programs that help students achieve their goals.

In 1971, the Extended Education Act was passed and the first extension classes were offered at CSULB. CCPE, then known as University Extension Services or UES, became the eighth college of CSULB in 1994. Since then, CCPE has expanded to include CSULB’s Advanced Media Production department, the American Language Institute, the Center for International Trade and Transportation, the International Training Programs office and the Center for International Education. As of 2011, more than 20,000 individuals enroll in more than 550 academic and professional programs every term. CCPE has evolved into a valuable and vibrant outreach arm of the university.

CCPE kicked off its year-long anniversary celebration with a campus community thank you breakfast on May 2 with more than 100 guests, including CCPE staff, university officials and campus community members gathering to celebrate CCPE’s accomplishments in helping students reach their educational and professional goals.

On July 18, the Ambassador of Nepal to the United States, His Excellency Shankar P. Sharma, visited CSULB and presented a lecture in honor of CCPE’s 40th anniversary. The lecture, titled “U.S.-Nepal Relations and Economic Opportunities,” drew a diverse crowd including members of the Friends of Nepal organization and CSULB students and faculty.

On Sept. 23, CCPE will host its 40th anniversary reception at the Chart Room dining plaza on campus. The invitation-only event will honor campus and community partners, along with alumni of CCPE programs who have become leaders of some of the region’s most distinguished companies and institutions.

As CCPE celebrates its four decades of service, it will continue to focus on developing self-supported undergraduate degrees and graduate degrees, as well as certificate programs that serve the critical needs of the workforce for California, the nation and the world.
